Simulation Training for ICU at the BRI

Over the past six months, sessions have covered topics ranging from major haemorrhage and sepsis to the Trust’s Civility Saves Lives campaign, with each scenario developed collaboratively by a diverse faculty.

Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive: 92% of participants reported improved confidence, and 97% felt the scenarios were directly relevant to their roles. Several innovations have enhanced the realism and accessibility of training, including securing a dedicated education bedspace, developing a mobile simulation trolley, introducing a participant register and QR-coded feedback, creating a simulation profile within the Philips documentation system, and embedding MDT simulation into nursing essential training.

Regional comparison shows GICU is the only ICU in the Southwest delivering weekly MDT simulation at this scale, with most units offering sessions monthly or less. Despite winter pressures and reduced capacity due to CICU building work, GICU will continue running shorter, focused simulations twice every Friday. Future plans include a simulation study day and collaboration with NBT and WGH to expand educational reach across the region.
